Reflection

There is an old saying said that "the wise, when leveraging the line"; this means that the wise should get support, and use tools to be successful. I feel like I am the wise, since I have learned how to use social media to be professional through ALES204 class. I am a second year university student, so it's really important to know how to introduce myself to the society. The ALES204 class provides many ways to let me involved in the society.
Before this class, I thought the function of Face book or twitter is chatting. Surprise me that Face book can act as a business card. On the twitter, I can follow the person who is successful in my field of study. As Julie said, I also see the value of twitter. Once, our class was on the "Gateway" newspaper since the new concepts of teaching, I was proud! Though the term, I twitted a lot, and gain a lot form others' twits. Since the ALES204 is a communication course, I did many presentations during the lab. At beginning, I am so nervous, and I did so badly on the Pecha Kucha presentation. After Dr. Wendy's class, I learned some efficient tips, and I did well on my poster presentation. Also I really enjoy MC's presentation; it was funny, clear, and memorable.
I have to say, this class is unpredictable. Every class gives me surprise. The assignments are not hard, but challengeable. For the wiki stub, many students were excited to edit a Wikipedia article, including me. I did a lot research about jasmine tea, and try to understand the code of wiki article. Finally I add my contribution on the wiki. ALES204 class is so helpful, it always introduces something around me but I do not know, like LinkedIn, Google docs, and so on. I really enjoy this course! Thank you to my lovely professor Dr.Laccetti and my TA Kaustav.

I have commented the following students' blog:
1.Cameron                   2. Yuan                  3.Julie
4.Kelsey                        5.Lin

This class is amazing!! If you are curious about this course, you can go to ALES204 blog:

Wiki stub article

Here is the link of wiki article:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jasmine_tea

Below is what I have added to "Jasmine tea"
"Health benefits:
The health benefits of jasmine tea  are considerable. The aroma of Jasmine tea has a very calming and relaxing effect on people. Women like Jasmine tea since it could decrease level of cholesterol in blood, and it also could help delay the aging cells and whitening the skins. The antioxidants in Jasmine tea can protect body against damage from free radicals. Thus, Jasmine tea is useful to prevent some forms of cancer. In addition, Jasmine tea can fight with viruses and bacteria by improving immunsystem."

Personally, I really like to drink herbal tea. My favorite herbal tea is chamomile tea. The chamomile tea can prevent eye dryness. I always use computer to do my homework and to search information, so chamomile is a good choice to protect eyes. The special flavor of chamomile makes me calm when I feel stressful. Other than chamomile tea, Jasmine tea is my second choice. I often put them together, and the chamomile and jasmine just open in the water. The flowering tea is kind of piece of art. I really like the smell of jasmine, since you can feel peaceful and calm.
At first, I thought edit wiki stub is easy, but I was so wrong. Finding a reliable source was hard, and we have to be responsible to those ones who will use the information provided on Wikipedia.  My classmate Kristin also find that it was hard to obtain a reliable source. She choose a  topic of folk medicine, and she added comments about how folk medicine is more popular in western country.

Using slide share

Using slide share on blog
This is a presentation in English class, and the topic is to compare and contrast the novel “The Tracey Fragment” by Maureen Medved and the same named movie directed by Bruce Macdonald. I really like this novel since it shows me a different world which is far away from me. If you are interested in the novel or the movie, those are highly recommended. Also, there are some comments from others about the movie and novel for you to read
http://theliterarylollipop.wordpress.com/2010/05/11/the-tracey-fragments-by-maureen-medved/
This is my first time to use slide share, which is an effective tool to share power point presentation with everyone on my blog. In class, we have learned how to make a powerful presentation. There are some very important points; for example, the content of ppt should be concise which means there should not be too much information on ppt; the font size, the background, and the picture should be picked wisely. I use point form in my ppt, and I choose light color as my background. In addition, I pick some representative and clear picture to make my ppt better.
After our class is on the newspaper, said our professor brings high technology to the class, I feel so lucky that I can learn how to uses social media in my study field, and of course I will use what I have learned in my career field in the future. In addition, I am very appreciated that I can know my classmates more by reading their blog. I just read Yuan's blog, and I really glad to know that she just acted as a volunteer to introduce her program Environmental science to senior high students and their parents. Yuan learned many communication skills through this activity.

Professional Facebook Profile

Now, I have two facebook accounts; one is for entertainment, and one is for business purpose. To be honest, at first I doubt how a facebook page can be professional. I mean I used to use it to chat with my friends. However, after I read the article 12 Ways to Use Facebook Professionally, I understand a little.
This is a professional facebook profile, so I become very careful to fill out the information on the facebook page. I choose a globe as my business photo since I want to be an international analyst in Food Industry.  If I want to find a job, the “education and work” part is very important. I write down my feelings about work, and what I have learned from work. Also, I write down my favorite music, sports, books and so on.
There are many advantages of using facebook to find jobs; I can join the group which is beneficial to my career, I can chat with co-workers to get different point of views about the same events. This facebook page is a connection between you and your work. I totally agree with Cameron that this page can attract employers attention compare to a trational resume.I have to say that facebook is very popular worldwide, so I believe a professional facebook profile could be very useful.

introductory post

My name is Chen Gai, and I come from the north part of mainland China. In Chinese, this “chen” means precious treasures. My mother gives this name to me to represent how much she loves me.
I am so excited to share these in my new blog name viola&gamma. Actually, my blog name has some connections with my friends. One of my best friends is called viola, and she gives me a nick name called gamma. Even though I have no idea why she called me that, but I love it.
Now, let’s move to the next topic. I am currently a second year student in University of Alberta, and my major is food business management. I love this program since I can learn food processing methods as well as methods used to analyze food industry. In the future, I could be an international policy analyst in food industry to analyze and control food safety and food quality. In China, the food industry is not as developed as western country, so I want to use my knowledge to improve food quality there. As an international policy analyst, this requires a high standard of communication skills. My personality is a little bit shy, so I should be more opened-mind and communicate with others to exchange opinion and to learn from others. Also, this is 21st century, the internet is fully developed, and it is an effective tool to explore news and whatever I am interested.
That’s it. I feel more comfortable to use this new tool—blog to communicate!
